Evergreen is one of the smallest lodges on offer in the Tortuguero National Park, and its location and guides receive consistently good feedback.

The style of the lodge connects you with nature, as many of the cabins and bungalows are located in pristine forest, linked by wooden walkways and surrounded by wildlife. You'll likely be woken up in the morning by nature’s alarm clock — howler monkeys calling in the trees above you! There are creature comforts to be had, however, in the lodge’s swimming pool and bar, as well as Wi-Fi spots and comfortable lounges dotted around the grounds.

The friendly staff and laid-back atmosphere make the Evergreen a charming setting for your time in Tortuguero.

OUR OPINION:

Although the Evergreen is a relatively simple lodge, it's one of our favorite options in Tortuguero due to its smaller size, superb guides and pristine location deep in the flooded forest.

Rooms

The lodge’s en suite rooms are simply furnished but spacious, constructed using wood from sustainable sources. The majority are in the form of individual cabins, which are built on stilts above the rainforest floor and linked by raised walkways. Set all around the lodge’s grounds, these give a real feeling of being in the jungle. Screened nets cover the windows, ceiling fans keep the cabins cool and a private deck with rocking chairs makes a pleasant place to relax outside your room.

Location

Tortuguero is a vast expanse of flooded forest and canals that's only accessible by boat or air, and Evergreen Lodge is positioned in the northeast of the region. It's just five minutes by boat from the entrance to the national park, and also a short boat journey from the small village of Tortuguero. Its location lends itself to wildlife spotting, with howler monkeys, colorful frogs and sloths often seen in the lodge surroundings.

Food and drink

Due to its remote location, all meals are included during your stay at Evergreen and are served buffet style. Breakfast service includes an omelet station as well as fresh fruit and juices, along with a variety of other options that change each day. Lunch and dinner are simple but hearty, with a mixture of local and international cuisine and salads. Two bars can be found at the lodge, one by the swimming pool and one by the canal — the imaginative tropical cocktails are certainly worth trying.

Facilities and activities

As with all lodges in Tortuguero, a certain number of group activities are included during your stay — these include nature walks with specialist guides and a boat trip exploring the canals of the flooded forest. When not out exploring the park, guests can relax by the swimming pool and shaded bar area or perhaps try the small on site canopy tour. Spa and massage services are also available on request.

The lodge is committed to sustainable development, implementing programs for energy and water saving, recycling and training in sustainability among other topics.
