The City of Raleigh was founded in 1792 as the capital of North Carolina and is perfectly located at the heart of the state.

Pedestrianized Capitol Square marks the center of the city, and the Capitol building itself houses Canova's fine statue of George Washington dressed as a Roman General. Close by, the North Carolina Museum of History and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences are well worth visiting.

Also worth a wander is the City Market neighborhood, a delightful enclave of cobbled, lamp-lit streets lined with boutiques and restaurants. Raleigh's most famous don, President Johnson, was born in a tiny hut which visitors can now view at Mordecai Historic Park.
