Best for... spectacular sunsets

Desert Quiver Camp, Sossusvlei, Namibia, recommended by Danielle

African sunsets are justifiably famous, almost as much as the obligatory sundowner. The empty grandeur of Namibia's deserts ensures the sunsets here are beautifully dramatic. The newly-opened Desert Quiver Camp looks out over scrubland towards rocky outcrops so, when the sun goes down, it seems as though every pebble glows with orange light. I was fortunate enough to be on a self-drive trip and arrived just in time to grab a cold beer and sit on the porch to watch the light fade into dusk.

Best for... avoiding the crowds

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the undoubted highlights of East Africa but with careful planning, you can minimise dealing with crowds. The Highlands is in the lesser-explored area of the Ngorongoro Highlands and offers not only access to the popular crater, but also to an undisturbed wilderness experience high on the slopes of the Olmoti Volcano. The camp is constructed from unique canvas pods heated by log burners, to keep you warm during the 2,700 metre chill.

Best for... honeymooners

If an adventurous honeymoon appeals to you and your partner, then the Angama Mara Camp certainly delivers. Its beautiful location high above the Masai Mara National Reserve guarantees a sharp intake of breath upon arrival at its private airfield, while the attention to detail of the stylish decor will also impress. But best of all, you can be down on the plains of the Mara Triangle in just 25 minutes, surrounded by everything from aardwolves to zebra, and of course Africa's Big Five.

Best for... post-safari relaxation

Bazaruto Archipelago

Benguerra Island isn't strictly a safari lodge, being on an island in the Indian Ocean, but it does make an excellent combination with a safari in South Africa's Kruger National Park. You can stay in pretty casinhas that blend Portuguese colonial influences with an idyllic tropical island ambience - white sand, palm trees and aquamarine sea. And while it's not a safari destination, it is still possible to see plenty of sensational wildlife here - from super-sized game fish to turtles and, occasionally, dugongs.
