When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast Region?

The Amalfi Coast is at its most enjoyable – and its most popular – between April and October, before the cooler winter weather sets in, with May and September being the best times to visit. The weather is beautiful and the activities plentiful, without the crowds that July and August bring.

Although the months from November to March bring fewer crowds, for that very reason restaurants and hotels in the smaller towns along the coast shut down, making hotel options extremely limited outside Naples and Sorrento. Many of the ferries and hydrofoils don’t run during this period, so it’s best to visit after Easter when they re-open.

For me, the best time to see the Amalfi Coast is late September and early October. The summer heat has lessened and it’s comfortable to go hiking or do other activities outside, but still warm enough to go swimming. Also, the crowds that fill up the small towns in July and August start to thin out a bit, making it easier to walk around.

Month-by-month guide to travelling in the Amalfi Coast Region

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Visiting the Amalfi Coast Region in November - March

Winter isn’t a time that we particularly recommend for travelling to the Amalfi Coast. The weather can be cold and damp and many of the shops, restaurants and hotels will be closed. There will still be some options open in Naples and Sorrento and though it’s not the best time to appreciate the Amalfi Coast’s beauty, the towns can warrant a pleasant break over Christmas without any crowds.
