When is the best time to visit Tuscany?

Mid to late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October) are two of the best times to visit Tuscany. The Tuscan landscape is at its most vibrant and the weather is particularly pleasant.

In the summer months (June to August), the fields are full of sunflowers and the fruit trees come into season, offering beautiful vistas and plenty of fresh produce to enjoy during the long hot days.

In the cooler winter months (November to March) the crowds thin out, but seasonal markets and festivals still provide entertainment for off-season visitors on day trips from Florence but most hotels in the smaller towns and countryside are shut.

I prefer to visit Tuscany in September and October when the weather is more comfortable, and the crowds are a bit thinner. Also, the harvest is in full swing, the hills turn lovely shades of gold and umber, and the whole region seems to have a little extra life. While I adore staying in the countryside, I prefer staying near one of the small towns, where everyone is excited for the harvest and the cooler weather.

Month-by-month guide to travelling in Tuscany

Ponte Vecchio, Florence

Visiting Tuscany in November - February

The Tuscan winter can be cold, but it’s a pleasant time to visit Florence as the city is much quieter than at other times of the year. During the festive season, Christmas markets in the city sell handicraft gifts and regional food and wine. While it’s possible to venture on day trips out into the Tuscan countryside from Florence, most hotels outside the city tend to shut down for the winter.
