Set in a grand old building with pale blue shutters lining the façade, Plaza Madeleine Hôtel & Spa is located just steps from the heart of medieval Sarlat. Its historic features are teamed with a modern warmth and style and the renovated rooms and pub-style bar provide a comfy and convenient retreat during a visit to the capital of the Dordogne region.

The 41 rooms and suites at Plaza Madeleine feature a contemporary design with neutral, earthy hues throughout. All feature modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, air conditioning and international TV, and have bright, modern bathrooms and windows overlooking the garden or small square in front of the hotel.

The hotel also boasts a heated outdoor pool, a Jacuzzi and spa, and the quiet garden and terrace make a good spot for an evening drink. Alternatively, there’s a convivial indoor bar and the choice of Sarlat’s many cafés, bars and restaurants just a short walk away.

OUR OPINION:

We love this hotel for the modern elegance of the communal areas and its generous amenities. It is located a short walk from central medieval Sarlat and offers a great base for visiting many of the renowned sights of the region.

Rooms

Classically styled but in a modern fashion, the rooms feature striped wallpapers and carpets, plush fabrics and sleek furniture. All are well-appointed with modern conveniences, and bathrooms are contemporary and bright, offering either a bathtub and shower combination or a walk-in shower. Double glazing lets you leave the street noise behind and each room is equipped with towels for the pool and bathrobes. All rooms are accessible by lift and have air conditioning, international TV and Wi-Fi.

Location

Set on the edge of the historic heart of Sarlat, Plaza Madeleine’s prime location offers easy access to the town’s many sights, atmospheric alleyways and traditional restaurants, cafés and bars. Sarlat is less than 40 minutes’ drive from many of the region’s most popular attractions, such as the ancient caves at Lascaux and Rouffignac.

Food and drink

A traditional hot and cold English buffet breakfast is served in the hotel’s breakfast room off the lobby. You can also order freshly squeezed orange juice and various individually prepared hot beverages. The Plaza Bar serves up a variety of cocktails as well as a sampling of regional wines by the glass, which can be paired with some meats and cheeses from the small tapas-style menu. There is no restaurant for evening meals, but the staff will point you to their closest recommended dining options.

Facilities and activities

The property offers an outdoor heated pool with a swim current, available to guests from Easter until October, while the spa and Jacuzzi are open year-round. The spa features a sauna and steam room as well as a themed shower and a quiet relaxation area.
