School Estate is a homestay run by Rani and KK Aiyapa. This estate bungalow is surrounded by flower-filled and manicured gardens situated amid 200 acres of coffee estate and was originally built as the home to Reverand Rictor, one of the early missionaries to Coorg during colonial rule. The four clean guest rooms with en suite bathrooms are old-fashioned but comfortable.
The cuisine is a mix of continental and Rani's traditional family recipes unique to the Coorgi people. Pork dishes are one of the highlights. Rice in various forms is the base of most of the main dishes like string hoppers, puttu and dumplings which are eaten accompanied by various curries and pickles. Dinner is with your hosts and is a great opportunity to find out more about the lifestyle and customs of this martial tribe. There is an in-house bar with a wide variety of drinks available.
There are a couple of interesting walks around the estate, a picnic by the river can be arranged and there is choice of shady spots to relax with a book. Bird watchers should also find plenty of interest here. Time permitting excursions into the surrounding area such as visiting the family's 200 year old 'clan house' can be arranged locally, as can a round of golf — your host KK is a keen player.
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favorite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can’t be bettered.
