Set in wilderness high above Lake Te Anau, Fiordland Lodge provides a relaxing base for anyone looking to soak in the striking natural beauty of the surrounding Fiordland National Park, home to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. The lodge’s modern design incorporates timber and river stone, high ceilings, and expansive windows that give you uninterrupted views over the water.

With just ten guest rooms in the main lodge, it feels intimate and peaceful. Rooms are spacious and light, opening onto a patio facing the lake. Behind the main building are two log cabins, each with a kitchenette.

The main lodge houses a dining and bar area, also overlooking the lake, where breakfast is served each morning and you can enjoy pre- or post-dinner drinks. Chefs use fresh, locally sourced ingredients to prepare varied lunch and dinner menus. The town of Te Anau is also just a short drive away should you prefer to dine elsewhere.

When not relaxing at the lodge, your time will likely be spent out in the national park, whether hiking, biking, fishing, or cruising on and around the fiords. Guides can also lead you on nature walks, or take you out with a photography expert who’ll help you hone your skills.

OUR OPINION:

We think this lodge provides a relaxing escape for exploring one of New Zealand’s best national parks. It does a great job of balancing nature, sustainability, and luxurious lodgings.

Rooms

In the main building, you can choose from a lodge room, deluxe lodge room, the Executive Suite, or the two-bedroom Lodge Studio. All are generously sized with plenty of natural light, wooden furniture balanced with muted natural tones, and a patio area where you can enjoy views over the lake. Behind the main building, the two log cabins may not have the same unimpeded lake views, but do give you extra space and privacy among rural scenery. Featuring recycled New Zealand timbers, each has a kitchenette and bedroom with queen-sized bed, while the larger has a mezzanine level for an additional double and single bed, sleeping up to five in total.

Location

Situated on the edge of Fiordland National Park, in the southwest corner of South Island, the lodge gives you a peaceful base from which to explore the park’s glacier-carved sounds and peaks on foot, by air, or by boat. The small town of Te Anau is nearby and has a collection of shops and restaurants.

Food and drink

  • Dining room with lake views where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, made from fresh local ingredients.
  • Canapes served before dinner in the lounge.
  • Bar area for a variety of drinks before or after your meal.
  • Well-stocked wine cellar.

Families

  • Families of up to four can stay in the two-bedroom Lodge Studio, while the larger log cabin can sleep up to five.

Facilities and activities

  • The lodge offers a variety of optional guided activities, including fly fishing and jet-boat fishing, nature walks, wilderness cruises, and photography experiences.
