Marbella Club

Marbella Club

Costa del Sol, Spain

After starting life as the summer retreat of a Viennese prince, the Marbella Club was converted into a hotel by his son in 1954. Having hosted international aristocracy and Hollywood glitterati over the years, the hotel emanates a relaxed elegance while maintaining the air of a glamorous retreat.

The 130 rooms are arranged like a small village. Plazas and paths weave through botanic gardens of fig, olive and orange trees, and grassy areas lead to the beach. Rooms have an understated sophistication, with bed linen in fresh, natural shades and sleek marble bathrooms. Each room also has a tablet with an app you can use to book golf rounds, room service, spa sessions and other hotel services.

At the top of the property you’ll find the hotel’s signature Grill restaurant and an outdoor pool. On the beachfront, the Beach Club boasts a large area of loungers, a heated saltwater pool and a restaurant shaded by palm trees.

There’s also an extensive spa, where you can enjoy therapeutic and detox treatments, as well as a range of fitness classes. Tee times can be arranged for the property’s golf course. The state-of-the-art Kids Club runs fully supervised classes and activities, from cooking and dance to arts and crafts.

OUR OPINION:

A much smaller and more intimate affair than the number of rooms suggest, we love the relaxed and friendly service and attention to detail on offer here.

Rooms

The decor of the rooms reflects the fresh, natural tones of the nearby beach and countryside in its bright linens and furniture. Each room has its own terrace or balcony, or direct access to the gardens. In addition to standard amenities such as air conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi, each room is set up with a tablet loaded with the hotel’s app so you can book services such as tee times, room service and spa treatments. The en suite bathrooms are clad in marble and have a separate bath and shower and double sinks.

Location

The hotel is located on the edge of Marbella, about an hour from Málaga and Ronda, two hours from Granada and two and a half hours from Seville. The front of the property opens directly onto the beach, accessing the promenade that runs into the heart of Marbella or to Puerto Banús. The Marbella Club Golf Course is a 20-minute drive from the hotel and you can reach it via the hotel’s free shuttle service.

Food and drink

The Marbella Club has nine bars and restaurants (some opening on a seasonal basis). At the Beach Club, you can enjoy creative cocktails and spit-roasted seafood and meats, while the Grill offers a more formal dining experience, serving classic Mediterranean fare. An Art Deco champagne bar opens in the winter.

Families

Children are well cared for in the fully supervised Kids Club, which is open every day. They can take part in a wide variety of scheduled activities that change from season to season, from cooking and arts and crafts to flamenco dancing. The state-of-the-art facilities include a cooking area and a dance studio, as well as a perfumery where the children can blend their own fragrances. There’s also more traditional outdoor play equipment and downtime areas.

Facilities and activities

You have access to the excellent 18-hole Marbella Club Golf Course, with one set of green fees included per person. There are also two outdoor pools and an impressive spa with a Moorish-inspired design that offers therapeutic and detox treatments as well as a fully equipped gym.
