Wheatleigh, whose design was based on a 16th-century Florentine palazzo, was completed in 1893 by Henry H. Cook, as a wedding present for his daughter. Many of the materials, and over 150 artisans were brought from Italy to accomplish the intricate carvings of both the interior and exterior.
Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who designed Central Park in New York, was responsible for creating the surrounding parkland. For many years, most of the 153-square-metre estate was used as a working farm. Now the hotel is privately owned, and is one of the smallest members of the Leading Hotels of the World, and features one of the best dining rooms on the east coast.
Wheatleigh is in close proximity to unique galleries, shops, and museums in the charming neighbouring towns. In winter, there are many ski areas close by, and in autumn Wheatleigh offers a spectacular opportunity to enjoy New England’s world-renowned autumn foliage.
The property has 19 custom-designed, luxurious rooms, and offers use of the fitness room, massage room, outdoor heated pool, tennis court, complimentary high-speed internet, DVD and CD library, daily wine tasting and a choice of bathroom amenities.
