Founded between 1535 and 1560 by Duarte Coelho Pereira, Penedo is a lovely colonial town in the state of Alagoas on the São Francisco River.
The town is littered with baroque churches and colonial buildings and is virtually untouched by tourists. The town has a lively market which is particularly good on Saturdays.
