Lakaz Chamarel

Our rating: First Class

Rooms

The lodge has five different accommodation categories spread across its grounds: Lakaz Standard rooms, Kaz Superior rooms, Garden Pool Suites, Sea View Pool Suites and an Exclusive Pool Suite. Each room and suite has a different theme and esthetic, reflecting the various cultural influences that have impacted on Mauritius over its history. All are spacious and comfortable, decorated in muted, earthy tones, with en suite open-air showers and fantastic views over the brilliant green gardens and surrounding forest from private terraces. Amenities include a ceiling fan, minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, a safe, iPod dock and free Wi-Fi access, with the suite categories also boasting private pools.

Mosquito nets and mosquito spray are provided as the tropical forest location attracts quite a few bugs. We'd also recommend taking good quality insect repellent and covering up whenever possible to avoid bites.

Location

Situated in the southwest of the island, at 400 meters in altitude, the lodge is an hour from the airport, an hour from the capital, Port Louis, and 10-15 minutes from the nearest beach.

Food and drink

The menu at Lakaz Chamarel has a distinctly Mauritian influence, with the chef preparing lots of local produce. A full American breakfast is served daily, alongside a continental buffet selection. Lunch is à la carte and dinner is table d’hote. Afternoon tea is served between 4pm and 5.30pm each day. There's a bar serving a variety of soft and alcoholic drinks, which can be enjoyed inside or on the wooden decking outside.

Families

Rooms can be configured to accommodate children, but there are no specific children’s facilities.

Facilities and activities

Facilities on site include two pools, a spa offering massages, a sauna and yoga sessions, a library, a TV lounge, free Wi-Fi access and bicycle hire. The lodge also provides a laundry service and a beach shuttle twice a day.

We were impressed by this quirky little hotel based in the mountains. The rooms were lovely, with Baudelaire poems on the wall, and the options of mountain biking and hiking in the surrounding hills are ideal for those who want to explore beyond the island's beaches. The scenery here is gorgeous, and the property offers something more intimate and homely than the big five star resorts found elsewhere on the island.
