Trincomalee (also referred to as Trinco) has always been an important eastern town throughout Sri Lanka's history.

In recent years it has been a place of much civil unrest, but is now open again to visitors. The town is best known for its harbor which is the biggest natural harbor in the world, which have seen the ships of the Portuguese, Dutch and British, among others, over the centuries.
