The Siam

Bangkok, Thailand

A superbly designed boutique hotel, The Siam is one of the most exclusive properties in Bangkok. Step inside and you'll be met by a private butler who will guide you around the soaring central atrium lined with priceless art and antiques, Chinese pottery, Thai heirlooms and colonial-era curios.

The attention to detail is meticulous with everything carefully curated to evoke a sense of vintage grandeur. The rooms are generously laid out with high ceilings and large windows, while the pool villas offer river views and private plunge pools.

Traditional Thai food is served in a series of historic teakwood houses, while the jazzy bistro offers international fare in a bustling setting. On top of this you'll get a decadent spa, a large gym and a Muay Thai boxing ring. You can take lessons in the cooking school, watch a movie in the cinema, retreat to the library or do yoga on the terrace.

The Siam is set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and is surrounded by lush gardens and a riverside infinity pool. Although set away from central Bangkok, it is right on the edge of the city's historic district and has its own private shuttle boat running up and down the river.

OUR OPINION:

The Siam is a superb hotel which we love for its individual flair and distinctive style. It offers excellent facilities and a great setting but the location may not appeal to everyone. Please speak to your country specialist if you have any concerns.

Rooms

Original artwork, historic photographs, dark woods and giant ceiling fans give the rooms and suites at The Siam a vintage feel with the black-and-white themed decor only interrupted by splashes of vibrant fabric. The high ceilings and spacious layout gives a sense of grandeur, while the fresh fruit baskets and individual design add a very personal touch. All rooms have free Wi-Fi and large bathrooms with bath and shower, but for sheer indulgence book a pool villa with river views, private plunge pool and roof terrace. For a special occasion Connie's Cottage, an antique teak house, offers the utmost in comfort and style.

Location

Set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in the royal Dusit district, The Siam is a little further from downtown Bangkok than other hotels but has its own river pier and a private shuttle boat service to the central station. The historic part of the city is closer with the Vimanmek Teak Mansion just five minutes away and the Grand Palace, National Museum and Wat Pho just a 15-minute ride in a tuk-tuk.

Food and drink

The hotel's romantic Chon Thai Restaurant is set in a cluster of three, century-old teak houses and serves bold, authentic Thai cuisine. Breakfast and all-day international dining is offered in the Deco Bar & Bistro which has a lively, Art Deco interior with its walls covered in old gramophones, brass instruments and vintage French cocktail posters. Café Cha serves light snacks throughout the day, while the Bathers Bar is the spot for riverside cocktails.

Families

The Siam has a dedicated children's pool, offers cooking and Thai kickboxing classes for kids and a children's treatment menu in the spa. A babysitter can be arranged to supervise in the in-house cinema.

Facilities and activities

The decadent Opium Spa is known as one of the finest in the city and offers a full range of treatments as well as yoga and meditation. The gym is worth a visit for its views alone and is staffed by personal trainers who also run boxing lessons in the Muay Thai ring. Daily cooking classes and market tours led by the chef are available, as well as a library and cinema, that is, if you can pull yourself away from the large, riverside infinity pool.
