U Inchantree Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi & The River Kwai, Thailand

Located on the edge of Kanchanaburi city on the banks of the River Kwai, the U Inchantree is a small boutique hotel ideally positioned for exploring the city's various attractions. The renowned 'Bridge on the River Kwai' is five minutes' walk away and can be seen in the distance from the riverside grounds.

The hotel has 50 rooms and suites which are based in two story buildings set around quiet courtyards, one of which is home to the eponymous inchan, an ancient tree. The decor throughout blends sleek, contemporary style with local elements in an understated but elegant fashion.

Fine Thai food as well as a selection of Western dishes is available in Peppers riverside restaurant where the outdoor deck offers impressive river views at sunset. There is also a riverside bar with a deck suspended over the water for a quiet evening drink.

There's a small riverside pool in the landscaped gardens and the hotel provides complimentary bicycles for guest use. The hotel also offers guests use of their room for a full 24 hours from the time of their arrival as well as breakfast whenever and wherever during their stay.

OUR OPINION:

Close to the attractions and restaurants of Kanchanaburi city, this hotel is a convenient option. Although the rooms don't offer great views, we love the riverside swimming pool and terrace area. Upgrade to a Deluxe room for a little more space.

Rooms

The hotel's 50 rooms and suites are located in two story buildings set around tranquil courtyards. All are stylishly designed with warm earthy tones, contemporary decor and sleek, modern bathrooms. A feature wall in each room uses motifs from the nearby bridge as a design element, which, along with some more subtle nods to local crafts and design give the rooms a sense of place. All rooms have rain showers, iPod docking stations, air conditioning, minibar and free Wi-Fi.

Location

The hotel sits on the banks of the River Kwai just five minutes' walk from the renowned 'Bridge on the River Kwai' and less than ten minutes' walk from the Prisoner of War Museum. The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery are a ten-minute drive away.

Food and drink

The hotel philosophy allows guests to have breakfast 'wherever, whenever' so there's no need to rise early. A more formal breakfast is offered each morning in the riverside Peppers Restaurant where guests can dine indoors in the air-conditioned salon or outside on the deck with far-reaching river views. Later in the day traditional Thai dishes as well as a selection of Western options are served. The Terrace bar and lounge is elevated over the river and is a great venue for sunset drinks.

Facilities and activities

The hotel pool is set in a tranquil spot under shady trees. There's a quiet library for relaxed reading or drinks, a gym and complimentary use of the hotel bikes should you wish to explore beyond the local area.
