Cruise the waters of this dramatic fjord in Gros Morne National Park to see cascading waterfalls and sheer cliffs.
Board your boat heading into the rugged fjords and dramatic scenery of Gros Morne National Park, seeing for yourself why ‘pond’ is a misnomer for this impressive waterway. The park has some of the most interesting and varied geography in Canada, and this boat trip is one of the best ways to experience the landscape.
Begin the tour by making your way along a 3 km (1.8 mile) gravel trail through the forest leading from the car park to the dock to board the 99-seater boat for the two-hour cruise. Take off into the landlocked fjord created by glaciation during the last ice age, 25,000 to 10,000 years ago. You’ll see flooded ravines, sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls as you go.
The 16 km (10 mile) long freshwater ‘pond’ reaches depths of 165 m (541 ft) and is home to Atlantic salmon, brook trout and Arctic char, as well as an unusual colony of cliff nesting gulls. Throughout the journey, there’s a live commentary to tell you all about the geological and historical features of the fjord.
There is plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor, and there are bathrooms on board. There are also facilities and a simple café at the dock. Your tour will finish with the walk back to the car park through the forest. Typically this takes about 40 minutes.
