Hotel Kimal, San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
The Kimal is located just off the main street, Caracoles, but nevertheless feels like an oasis thanks to its pretty maze of courtyards planted with flowers and shrubs and its spacious, cool interior.
The hotel has just 19 rooms and all are examples of typical construction, built out of local wood and mud and with attractive features such as lattice straw ceilings and bamboo pillars. Some rooms have their own terrace giving onto an inner courtyard and there's an outdoor area with swimming pool and bar.
Although it has a good restaurant, a great advantage of the hotel's central location is that there are plenty of choices for eating out. Next door, Restaurant Paacha is a favourite with the San Pedro locals due to its hearty and delicious food and reasonable prices, as well as its live music and entertainment evenings.

Alternative places to stay nearby
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favourite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can’t be bettered.
Experiences while staying here
The following activities are designed to give you the most authentic experiences of the area where you’re staying. We work with local guides, who use their knowledge and often a resident’s eye to show you the main sights and more out-of-the-way attractions. Our specialists can also suggest outdoor pursuits and activities, such as cooking classes, that will introduce you to the traditions of the area’s inhabitants.
Join a shared excursion to observe the vast night skies of the Atacama Desert. The altitude of the town as well as the remote location makes this one of the best spots for astronomy, for both amateurs and experts alike.
The day begins by heading south from San Pedro de Atacama to Cejar Lagoon (the floating lagoon). This small lagoon has impressive white edges of crystallised salt and is intensely turquoise in colour, providing a home for flamingos and tagua birds.
