Kunming is the capital of Yunnan and home to 3.5 million people, though only 1 million actually live in the city itself.
At an elevation of up to 1,890 metres, the city has a warmer and much milder climate than most other Chinese cities.
Exploring Kunming
Kunming is fairly uninspiring but provides reasonable access to many tourist sites based deeper in the rural areas of South China. However, the city is good for shopping and if visitors explore hard enough they can find some interesting alleyways where quaint old wooden houses built long before the high rise department stores and offices remain.
There are some good places to eat and a day among the shoppers, roadside masseurs, karaoke stalls and frequent street performers can make for an interesting time.
