Jaagir Manor is a beautiful former hunting lodge set in India’s Terai region near the border with Nepal. Over 80 years old, the property is surrounded by guava and mango orchards, creating a secluded and sheltered atmosphere. It blends a variety of experiences, from a freshwater pool and inviting relaxation areas, perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the breathtaking 1,284-sq-km (496-sq-mile) Dudhwa wildlife corridor, a hidden sanctuary of unparalleled biodiversity.
The property offers fifteen rooms across three distinct settings. The former owner’s residence evokes a sense of history, with rooms featuring original 1950s furniture and vintage photos of the region, as well as a spacious, comfortable lounge downstairs. Stilt and brick villas are dotted among the trees in the grounds, with brick villas set over two levels and including internal stairs.
Dining at Jaagir Manor stands out, offering a set menu of local specialties and excellent Western dishes. Cocktails, often crafted from fruit grown on the estate, are a highlight. As evening falls, lanterns light the trees and pathways, creating a warm and immersive atmosphere. The attentive staff make every stay feel like a retreat in nature, where nothing is too much trouble.
We love how the property combines the feel of a safari lodge with the character of a historic homestay. It’s a great base for exploring the three national parks in the area, but it’s just as easy to spend a day relaxing on the grounds with the excellent food and drink. In the evenings, when everything is lit up, the place has a really warm, inviting atmosphere.
