The Residence

Although a modern building, The Residence is built in grand colonial style and offers great service. Despite its obvious elegance, it remains a warm and welcoming place with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

The Residence exudes an air of sophistication from the moment you walk in the door. The high ceilings, carved woods and elaborate chandeliers have their roots in Mauritius’ colonial heritage yet the stylish decor is muted and contemporary. The friendly staff are equally memorable finding a perfect balance between diligence and discretion. Outside, lush tropical gardens surround the beautiful pools and lead to a gorgeous, long stretch of soft sand overlooking a sheltered lagoon. With three restaurants serving excellent Creole, French and international cuisine, guests have the option to dine inside, by the pool or on the beach. Complimentary water sports and boat trips to the nearby coral reef are available, and there's a superb spa, as well as a fitness room and tennis courts. The hotel is also close to a number of local attractions including a nearby village, dive centre and two golf courses.

The 163 spacious rooms and suites here are colonial in feel with stone floors and marble bathrooms and each room has a private balcony.

Finish it off with an exhilarating tour through the rolling dunes of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve which is home to rare flora and fauna and spectacular desert scenery.

Set on The Walk, a recent waterfront promenade development with a vast range of restaurants and shops, the JA Ocean View is a large contemporary hotel with stylish, minimalist design and a choice of six restaurants and bars. All 334 rooms and suites have private balconies with glorious sea views.

Description

Set in lush tropical gardens along a mile of beach and overlooking a sheltered lagoon on Mauritius' east coast, The Residence is an elegant and sophisticated resort built in a colonial style.

Elegant and sophisticated, the resort still manages to be warm and welcoming with a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The service here is excellent and there is an excellent range of activities to choose from.

For families

The Residence Mauritius is a great choice for families with plenty of facilities and activities.

The Planters Kids Club is set inside a spacious building inspired by a sugar-cane plantation house with a playground and surrounding gardens. Children from three to 12 years can enjoy a range of activities including treasure hunts, snorkelling lessons, sports competitions, body painting, hikes and picnics, glass-bottom boat tours, theme days, pony rides and more.

The kids’ club also offers evening entertainment such as fashion shows, plays and films. For an extra charge children can eat in the kids' club which offers a wide assortment of dishes and even has pizza making in the small baking ovens.

A day nursery as well as baby-sitting service is also available for around ten euros an hour.

Families will always be accommodated on ground floor rooms, as some of the upper level rooms do not have balconies suitable for children.

The Residence sits on a long stretch of white sand beach on the north-east coast of the island, overlooking a sheltered lagoon.

Centre Flacq, a small market town with a few shops and a weekend market, is just a short drive away.

Our opinion

Architecturally, this is the most impressive hotel on the island; the spacious, beautifully built building is lovely to relax in and the rooms are all of a very high standard.

Rooms

The 163 rooms and suites are spacious, luxurious and stylish and each has private butler service.

Set in three-storey buildings, the rooms are furnished in cool, calming colours and have large balcony or terrace, shuttered windows, air-conditioning, television, DVD player and mini bar.

Please note the Colonial Ocean Front Suites have balustrades on the balconies which are below the EU regulation height. If you are concerned about this please ask your Audley specialist to secure you a ground floor room.

Activities, diving & excursions

There is a large swimming pool with Jacuzzi as well as a smaller children's pool and a wide range of activities available at the resort.

On land there are three floodlit tennis courts, volleyball, a gym, aerobics lessons, steam room and sauna as well as a golf course nearby.

On the water there is a wide range of complimentary water sports including water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and snorkelling. Fishing and catamaran cruises are also available at a charge.

There is a dive centre located at the yacht club on the hotel grounds. Dive packages can also be booked for three, five or ten dives and night dives are also possible. PADI courses are done at the dive centre at the Belle Mare Plage hotel, 15 minutes away.

Food & drink

The Residence rightly prides itself on its cuisine and guests have a choice of three restaurants.

The Dining Room restaurant, overlooking the pool, is open for breakfast and dinner serving buffet meals and set menus that offer a choice of Mauritian or Western dishes.

The Verandah serves lunches around the pool and is the perfect place for a light snack, salad, sandwich or pizza.

Finally, The Plantation, a planter's house by the beach, offers a wide range of seafood and a selection of dishes cooked with local herbs and spices. The food here is particularly good and it is popular with both locals as well as hotel residents. In the evenings, Sega dance performances are arranged several times a week.

In addition to the restaurants there is a spacious bar, whose walls are hung with a fine collection of engravings of scenes from Mauritius's history. This is a great place to enjoy a late breakfast, cup of tea or cocktail in the evening with the live music that is provided until midnight.

Spa Facilities

The Residence has a beautiful spa, The Sanctuary, located in the tropical gardens overlooking the lagoon with ten treatment rooms with a range of pampering treatments.

Dubai

Location: Dubai

On the shores of the Arabian Gulf, Dubai was, until recently, an oil rich desert state with little tourist infrastructure, but in only a few decades it has transformed itself into one of the world’s leading beach destinations.

If you are travelling to the Musandam Peninsula in Oman or flying to Muscat with Emirates airlines you will be landing in Dubai and it makes for a natural break for a few days’ relaxation. Dubai’s hotels are renowned and include some of the most lavish properties in the world, either on the beach, around Dubai Creek, or in the splendid isolation of the desert.

Never understated, Dubai makes a bold statement with an extensive list of activities including excellent restaurants, shopping, championship golf courses, and an indoor real snow ski slope.

JA Ocean View Hotel

Accommodation: JA Ocean View Hotel

This smart, contemporary hotel enjoys a great location in the JBR The Walk area, a growing area south of downtown with over 500 restaurants and shops within walking distance. There are also plenty of entertainment options in the area including an outdoor and indoor cinema as well as an inflatable play park off the beach.

The JA Ocean View itself also has a good choice of dining with 5 restaurants ranging from a French brasserie style restaurant and New York deli style restaurant to a café in the lobby and a mezzanine bar with beer garden. There is an outdoor pool at the hotel from which steps lead down to the path to the beach; the hotel provides beach kits with towels, mats and a beach umbrella. There is also a shuttle to Jebel Ali beach about 15 minutes drive away excluding Fridays and Saturdays.

Rooms have a smart, modern décor, are a good size with a balcony and all are seafacing. Superior Sea View rooms are slightly larger than the standard Sea View rooms with 2 fold out beds so that they can accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children. Club rooms are on higher floors with access to the Club Lounge. Junior Suites and One Bedroom Suites are also available.
