Quilálea Island rests in a marine sanctuary, with turquoise seas and rich coral reefs surrounding it. The island is 34 hectares in size and lies alongside a deep channel with direct access to the Indian Ocean. The island forms part of the Quirimbas Archipelago, a necklace of coral islands which stretch from Pemba in the south to Tanzania in the north.
The island is private and has one tiny lodge, Azura Quilalea Private Island, which has been completely rebuilt. Each has a makuti thatched roof, with superb views to the sea and reefs from the private veranda. All have a king-size bed, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and have been stylishly and tastefully decorated.
Nearby, the dining area and lounge are situated to benefit from sunrise and sunset and overlook the sea. Menus are based on fresh fish and seafood prepared in the traditional Mozambican style, complemented with Portuguese wines. Alfresco lunches and dinners can be served on pristine beaches around the island, or in the new wine cellar.
Just off the main beach is a PADI certified water sports centre offering fishing, diving, snorkelling and kayaking through the mangroves. There is also a lovely walking trail to Turtle Beach where you can look out for nesting turtles or enjoy a romantic picnic. Other activities at Azura Quilalea Private Island include bird and whale watching in season. Day visits to historic Ibo Island and cultural tours can also be arranged.

Ibo Island Trip
An enjoyable way to spend a morning is with a trip to Ibo Island. Ibo was a key Swahili trading post and the capital before Pemba. You can wander among the main streets which have fascinating, but very crumbling, colonial architecture.

Rolas Island Trip
You can explore the island on which there is a very small fishing village where you often see fish out on racks to dry. There is a good amount of coral around the island and the snorkelling is wonderful.
