Kathmandu Guest House

Kathmandu, Nepal

This large 120-room hotel is something of an institution in the busy Thamel area thanks to the combination of comfortable rooms and a central location.

Surrounded by well-manicured gardens, the hotel is situated in a grand Rana Dynasty mansion, with a warm yellow façade and soaring white columns. It offers a wide range of room options that are suitable for many budgets, including family friendly two-bedroom apartments with living, dining and kitchen areas. Though the rooms are a bit simple, they all have modern en suite bathrooms, and many have Wi-Fi access, with some also featuring a private balcony and air conditioning. Guests can also choose between two on-site restaurants.

Located in the heart of the Thamel area, the hotel is just a short walk away from many of the area's temples, museums, markets and shopping, making it a convenient base for exploring Kathmandu.

OUR OPINION:

Rooms

The Kathmandu Guest House offers five room choices. The smallest options are the Standard and Garden-Facing rooms, which are located in the old building. Though reasonably priced, these rooms don't offer any air conditioning. We recommend the Deluxe and Suite rooms in the new Siddhi Annex, which provide air conditioning, a bath, a safe, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. In addition, there are two family apartments that have two bedrooms, a living, dining and kitchen area, though these are often booked up by long-term guests.

Location

Located in the heart of Thamel, just a short walk from temple-packed Durbar Square, the Kathmandu Guest House is a comfortable hotel that's well situated to explore the city.

Food and drink

There are two dining options: KGH Dream Garden Café or the Inner Sanctum Restaurant. KGH Dream Garden Café serves a wide range of Continental, Chinese and Indian food, as well as dishes cooked in a traditional Indian clay oven, which guests can enjoy in the tree-shaded garden. Inner Sanctum is a new restaurant in the old palace courtyard where guests can enjoy a peaceful candlelit dinner.
