A nature lover’s paradise, Bird Island offers a private island, Robinson Crusoe experience without the luxury resort experience and the price that usually goes with it.
A low key, relaxed escape this rustic eco lodge offers a tranquil escape and even when the lodge is full there will only be 80 people on the entire island. Surrounded by beautiful, white sand beaches and clear, turquoise waters, the island has a beautiful setting.
The birdlife is spectacular here with large numbers of lesser and brown noddies, fairy terns and waders. You will also see giant tortoises, including Esmeralda, once weighing in as the largest in the world, and the hawksbill turtles that lay their eggs on the shore.
The 24 chalets are simple but comfortable and sit among the remaining coconut palms of an old coconut plantation. Each has a spacious veranda which is the perfect spot for relaxing and watching the wildlife.
There are no phones, televisions or Wi-Fi in the rooms — Wi-Fi is available in the reception area. Although there is no air conditioning in the rooms, there is an overhead fan to help the sea breezes cool the rooms.
Set in the most northerly archipelago of the Seychelles, this private island is accessed by a 30 minute light aircraft flight from Mahé.
Surrounded by over three miles of beautiful white sand beaches, shelving gently into the sea, this small island is a beautiful, natural setting and a perfect spot for getting away from it all.
Food and Drink
The food at Bird Island is simple but good quality, served as a buffet in the main restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner featuring a small selection of dishes at each meal.
There is also a comfortable lounge bar where guests can enjoy pre-dinner cocktails or afternoon tea just a stone’s throw from the west beach.
Although families are welcome, there are no specific childrens' facilities and Bird Island would best suit children happy to entertain themselves or who have an interest in birdlife and marine life.
Facilities and Activities
There is no pool at the hotel but miles of beautiful, gently shelving beach to swim from. Please note to preserve the beautiful setting, there are no sun loungers.
Many guests enjoy taking in the wonderful scenery walking around the island and of course, watching the island’s wide array of fascinating wildlife is a key activity.
For those wishing to be a little more active, there are kayaks available to paddle across the bay or around the island, and it's common to see a good variety of marine life include numerous fish and turtles. Snorkeling gear is also available for those wanting to explore the underwater world a little further.
Environmental and Social Responsibility
Bird Island is heavily involved in a number of conservation projects and flora and fauna are now thriving on the island due to the tireless efforts of researchers and the Seychellois staff.
The sooty tern breeding area has increased the colony size from 18,000 pairs in the 1960s to 750,000 pairs today while cessation of turtle harvesting on the island has led to Bird Island hosting good populations of both green and hawksbill turtles. Female turtles are now tagged and nests monitored as part of a wider turtle monitoring plan in the Seychelles.
Rabbits and rats have also been eradicated from the island. Both had been accidentally introduced in the past with very negative effects on the bird population and their eradication has led to an increase in the local bird populations, particularly brown noddies.
This is one of our favourite eco lodges and is an excellent choice for those wanting to get away from it all without the high end luxuries of a polished resort.
