Overlooking the bay at St. Andrews by-the-Sea, New Brunswick, The Algonquin Resort dates back to 1889 when it opened in Canada’s first seaside resort town. Re-opening in 2014 following an extensive refurbishment, The Algonquin has kept the elegance of the original building and combined this with modern facilities in each of the rooms. You can expect high-quality bed linens, a flat-screen TV and custom artwork. Some of the rooms overlook St. Andrews and the Passamaquoddy Bay. In others, you’ll find a private balcony, kitchenette or spacious sitting area.
The resort is a short stroll from Main Street, and you’ll find plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. One noteworthy restaurant is the Rossmount Inn, a mile or so away, which has made a name in New Brunswick for its menu celebrating regional produce.
Departing from the bay, whale watching trips are available during the summer season. Minister’s Island — just over 2 km (1 mile) away and accessible during low tide — is a destination for walking with an Edwardian mansion to visit.
Braxton’s Restaurant & Bar offers breakfast, lunch and dinner in the main building of the resort. Menus are influenced by the seasons and created with fresh, local ingredients.
Looking out toward Passamaquoddy Bay, The Algonquin Golf Course’s Clubhouse serves lighter dishes in a relaxed setting.
Room service is available upon request, or you can opt for any-place dining if you prefer to eat near the pool or in the lobby.
There are two swimming pools — one indoor and one outdoor that features a three-story waterslide — and a playground. You can also borrow bicycles to explore the local area.
At Katy’s Cove, you can enjoy beach games, barbecues and swimming.
The resort’s spa offers massages, facials and other beauty treatments. There are also indoor and outdoor pools at the resort, as well as a fitness studio.
Manicured gardens and a rooftop terrace invite you to enjoy the scenery, and the sea is the backdrop to the 18-hole golf course.

Bay of Fundy whale watching
Take to the waters of the Bay of Fundy with a local captain on a small boat to try and spot the 12 different types of whales that frequent the region, as well as dolphins, and many seabirds. You’ll also learn about the local fishing industry and see the ‘catch of the day’.
