Set within the bustling cobbled streets of historic Saint-Émilion, Au Logis des Remparts is a simple yet warm hotel with plenty of local character. The hotel’s 20 rooms and suites are split between three buildings, one of which is a protected structure dating back to the 14th century which was once used for storing wine.
The hotel boasts an enviable location in the heart of the town, at the top of the hill near the main street, restaurants and shops, but its large garden and swimming pool to the rear offer a tranquil retreat from the world outside.
Inside, the decor combines original features such as exposed stone walls, wooden beams, stone staircases and stained glass with a simple, modern style. The rooms are bright and contemporary and all feature Wi-Fi and air conditioning, however due to the historic nature of the building there is no elevator in the property.
While the hotel does not have a restaurant for lunch or dinner, there are plenty of options within walking distance. However, guests can enjoy their breakfast on-site either indoors or alfresco on the terrace in the shade of the trees and the stone walls of the hotel.
The 20 rooms and suites at Au Logis des Remparts are set across three buildings and vary considerably in size. The larger rooms offer garden and pool views, the smaller ones, street views, while the large Gothique de Prestige suite has a private terrace. All are decorated in a simple, contemporary style with touches of local tradition in the fabrics and artwork. Modern bathrooms, air conditioning and Wi-Fi are standard. The historic nature of the building means that there is no elevator but a porter service is available for your bags.
Saint-Émilion is a hilltop town an hour’s drive east of Bordeaux and two hours’ drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda and the Dordogne. The hotel’s position at the higher end of the town means it benefits from far-reaching views as well as being accessible by car, which isn’t always possible here. The central square is down a steep, cobbled alleyway, whereas the main street with its numerous shops and restaurants is only a few minutes’ walk away.
Breakfast is served daily either indoors or out on the terrace in any of the shady spots in the garden. Although the hotel does not have a restaurant for lunch or dinner, there are plenty of options within walking distance and lots of choices that don’t involve taking the steps down to main square. Saint-Émilion has three Michelin-starred restaurants as well as many bistros and cafés.
The generous swimming pool is the highlight of this hotel and is set in mature gardens that overlook the surrounding vineyards. Its position, well away from the noise of the street, offers a peaceful retreat right in the heart of the town.
Modern and friendly, Au Logis des Remparts is great base from which to explore the bustling town of Saint-Émilion. We also love the gardens and swimming pool, and the historic nature of the building.
Where possible, we like to offer a range of accommodation for each stop of your trip, chosen by our specialists as some of their favorite places to stay. To help you make the right choice, we give each property a rating based on its facilities and service, but we also look for hotels with distinct character or a location that can’t be bettered.
