Umaid Bhawan, Jodhpur, India
Built in the early years of the twentieth century and designed, surprisingly, by the British Institute of Architects, this fantastic palace set in enormous grounds is a landmark for miles around. It was originally conceived as a job creation project for the impoverished Rajasthani subjects of the maharajah. The ex-Maharajah is in residence.
