La Posada

Winslow, The US

One of the original hotels along the Santa Fe Railway, La Posada remains one of the great places along Route 66.

Designed in the 1920s in the style of the great haciendas of the Southwest, it has a distinctly Spanish and Mexican feel, with its high exposed wooden roof beams giving a sense of grandeur from a bygone era. A museum and gallery in its own right, the hotel exhibits many photographs and items from its past throughout the property.

OUR OPINION:

La Posada offers guests much more than just a hotel stay. The rooms come with somewhat basic facilities, and the railway line behind the property may affect the lighter sleeper. However, the historical nature and uniqueness of this hotel more than make up for any shortcomings.

Rooms

La Posada’s rooms are named after famous people who’ve frequented the hotel. There are four categories, but each room is individual in layout with either one king bed, two queen beds, or one king bed and one sofa bed or futon. Decorated with local handwoven Native American rugs and Talavera tiles, the rooms bring the original essence of the property inside. Rooms can look out over the gardens or grounds.

Location

Situated on Route 66, La Posada is a short walk to the middle of town, where there are cafés and galleries as well as the landmark corner made famous by The Eagles’ song Take it Easy.

Food and drink

The Turquoise Room looks out to the south and over the Santa Fe Railway. Serving modern Arizonian cuisine, much of it sourced locally, the restaurant focuses on farm-fresh produce complemented by an extensive wine list.

Offering guests a relaxing place to unwind, the Martini Lounge is reminiscent of the hotel’s early days and makes for a great social atmosphere.

Families

With wide open gardens, there is plenty of room for families to explore on the property. The room configuration with two queen beds can cater for up to four guests, and the property has a limited number of rollaway beds available, if required, at an additional charge.

Facilities and activities

La Posada is a museum and art gallery with a number of displays throughout. The hotel offers guests a booklet so you can take a self-guided tour of the property and discover some of its history in years gone by.

Accessibility

La Posada is accessible in the common areas and in some of its ground-level guest rooms.
