Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

  • Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Philadelphia. On arrival, the rest of the day is free to take at your own pace. Take a stroll along the city’s cobblestoned streets to see Independence Hall, the historic landmark that famously established Philadelphia as the “birthplace of America”.

  • Start your day by exploring Philadelphia’s thriving arts scene, from the Museum of Art to independent galleries dotted throughout the city. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the lively buzz of Reading Terminal Market, one of the oldest public markets in America. Explore an array of local food vendors and try a Philly cheesesteak sandwich — a true local favourite.

  • Leave Philadelphia behind to collect your car hire and head three hours west to Gettysburg, a town shaped by its Civil War connections. Alongside a knowledgeable guide, learn more about the Battle of Gettysburg or pay a visit to the Jennie Wade House for a deeper dive into the town’s storied past.

  • After a leisurely morning, make the three-hour journey southwards toward Shenandoah National Park. Journey along the iconic Skyline Drive, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After dropping off your bags, spend time relaxing and soaking up the dramatic scenery or explore some of the region’s many hiking trails.

  • Formed millions of years ago, the Luray Caverns are a sight to behold, lined with towering chambers and impressive rock formations. Explore this ethereal cave system alongside a knowledgeable guide, with the rest of your afternoon free to explore the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley.

  • Set off early toward Williamsburg to make the most of today’s three-hour journey. After a short drive, make a pit stop in Charlottesville to visit Monticello, the historic home of President Thomas Jefferson, or detour further along in Richmond to stroll through the vibrant art murals of the Fan District. On arrival in Williamsburg, enjoy a free evening to explore the local taverns, some of which were once frequented by President George Washington.

  • Delve into the rich history of Colonial Williamsburg, where historic buildings and costumed narrators bring 18th-century America to life. In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll in Merchant’s Square to explore the charming boutiques and restaurants of Williamsburg.

  • Venture along the scenic Colonial Parkway to discover Jamestown and Yorktown, collectively known alongside Williamsburg as America’s Historic Triangle. Uncover the history of centuries gone by, including the site of the first enduring English settlement in North America. After diving into the region’s past, take a short detour for a relaxing lunch at a local winery.

  • Depart Williamsburg and make your way across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel for a five-hour drive to St. Michaels. Stretch your legs at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge to spot great blue herons wading in the wetlands. On arrival in St. Michaels, take time to relax and soak in the tranquil waterfront views as sailboats drift gently through the harbour.

  • Dive into Virginia’s rich maritime heritage at the Hooper Strait Lighthouse and Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. During the evening, enjoy freshly caught seafood along the bay front or watch the sun set over the eastern shore.

  • Spend the day relaxing or take a scenic drive through the Chesapeake Bay to discover more of the region’s quaint towns and hidden harbours.

  • Make the short journey today onward to Annapolis, a vibrant waterfront city known for its naval history and sailing culture. Meander through the Historic District, explore the U.S. Naval Academy and enjoy the lively maritime spirit of the city.

  • Today, leave Maryland behind and make the short drive inland to Washington, D.C. After settling into your hotel, spend the rest of the day exploring the historic charm of Georgetown, where boutique shopping, riverside cafés and leafy streets invite you to unwind.

  • Start your day by delving into the rich history of Washington, where iconic monuments, landmarks and world-class museums take centre stage. Take a privately guided tour of Arlington Cemetery, the poignant resting place of many acclaimed figures in American history, including President John F. Kennedy and his family.

  • Today, you may have time to do some last-minute shopping or sightseeing before dropping your car off at the depot and heading to the airport in time for your flight home.

  • Arrive home today to complete your journey.
