Set in lush tropical gardens overlooking the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, Essque Zalu Zanzibar combines contemporary luxury with traditional style thatched buildings. A large jetty extends out from the cliffs at the front of the property and provides a spectacular spot for evening cocktails and light breezy lunches. At high tide when much of the white sandy beach disappears, it is possible to swim here or in the large infinity pool, which offers stunning views of the water.

Part of the Preferred Boutique Collection group, the hotel has 40 suites and nine three- and four-bedroom villas. Each suite has a large master bedroom and private bathroom, sitting room and outside terrace or balcony overlooking the gardens, pool or ocean. They are all equipped with flat-screen televisions, air conditioning and wireless internet. The villas also each have their own private pool and massage room as well as dining facilities where guests can prepare their own meals, or get a chef to cook for them on request.

There are three restaurants: the Gourmet Deli, which serves fresh local organic produce, the à la carte restaurant and the more relaxed Jetty bar. There is also a kids' club and well-equipped spa offering a range of treatments.
