The Kimberley by land, air & sea

This morning, make your way back to the airport for your onward flight to Kununurra, in the heart of the Kimberley region. On arrival, a high-clearance 4x4 transfer will take you to your Outback resort on the Gibb River Road, where you will spend the next three nights.

The nearby Purnululu National Park and Bungle Bungle Range are a light-aircraft flight away from your homestead. Today, you'll take a scenic flight over these impressive structures, which were formed over 350 million years ago. On the way there, you'll get a bird's-eye view of the immense Lake Argyle, an enormous freshwater lake more than 20 times the size of Sydney Harbour.

You have a full day at leisure to explore the expansive El Questro station and take advantage of the wide range of touring options on offer. Perhaps enjoy a rugged 4x4 experience and take in the beautiful escarpment scenery, take a river cruise through the Chamberlain Gorge while wildlife spotting, or try barramundi fishing. Alternatively, you may choose a slower pace of life and take a soak in the nearby natural thermal springs.

A 4x4 transfer will collect you today and transfer you to the Kununurra Airport in time for your domestic flight to Darwin, in Australia's 'Top End', which will take approximately one hour. Upon arrival, you'll be transferred to your hotel. Spend your evening at leisure and, if arriving on a Thursday or Sunday between May and October, perhaps take in the bustling Mindil Beach markets.

Today, you have time to relax and enjoy your final day in Darwin before joining your cruise tomorrow. Perhaps check out Stokes Hill Wharf or the Flying Doctors Museum. In the evening, savour the flavours of the Top End's best local produce on a sunset dinner cruise around Darwin Harbour.

Today is the start of your exciting multi-day cruise of the Kimberley Coast, which will see you travel from Darwin in the Northern Territory to Broome in Western Australia. The Kimberley Coast is one of Australia's most remote and untouched regions and one which receives a huge tidal range, which means that no two itineraries are the same. Coral Expeditions has been sailing these waters for many years and will ensure that each voyage takes in its key highlights. Each day will present you with a huge array of side activities to get to know this fascinating part of the country.

King George Falls is one of the Kimberley's most awe-inspiring sites, and at over 80 m (262 ft), it is the highest twin falls in Western Australia. Today's activities focus on exploring scenic gorges, getting up close to the base of King George and visiting Tranquil Bay for some beach walking and exploration.

Discover two very different sides of Kimberley history today with visits to Vansittart Bay and Jar Island. First, join your Expedition Leader for a view of the wreckage of a US Air Force DC3 that crash-landed on the beach during World War II. Later, be humbled by the rock art gallery of Jar Island and some examples of Bradshaw Paintings (Gwion) that date back some 20,000 years.

Witness one of the Kimberley's most photographed sites today, Mitchell Falls, a beautiful four-tiered waterfall which sits proudly on the Mitchell Plateau and where you have the option to take a scenic helicopter flight (additional expense) to capture it from the air. Further to this, today you'll take in natural sandstone caves and enjoy a gourmet Aussie barbecue with accompanying Kimberley sunset.

Today you'll have the opportunity to take in further rock art galleries, this time on Bigge Island, as well as enjoying a coastal cruise and nature walk.

Explore the mighty Prince Regent River today and take in the picturesque Kings Cascade, a beautiful waterfall which, as the name suggests, cascades over terraced rock formations. Later you'll venture ashore in Careening Bay and the site where Phillip Parker King inscribed a large boab tree with 'HMC Mermaid 1820', after his ship which was careened during his second voyage in the Kimberley and a marking which is still visible almost 200 years later.

The extreme of the Kimberley tidal movements becomes evident today as you watch the Montgomery Reef 'rise' out of the ocean before your very eyes. You'll join your expedition team onboard one of its tenders, which will allow you to get up close to this natural phenomenon and discover its diverse marine life, including turtles, rays, and reef sharks.

Today you'll have further opportunity to explore the rich aboriginal history of the Kimberley as you visit the secluded Raft Point, home to interesting examples of Wandjina art and the mysterious Bradshaw 'Gwion' Paintings.

Your voyage today will travel through the Buccaneer Archipelago, which is home to over 800 islands and in Talbot Bay, one of the Kimberley's most well-known sites, the Horizontal Falls. Described by David Attenborough as 'one of the greatest natural wonders of the world', this natural attraction is formed, again, by the Kimberley's extreme tidal movements and a 12 m (39 ft) surge of outgoing tide. You'll have the opportunity to board the Coral Expeditions Zodiacs for an exhilarating ride through the falls.

Your last full day of the cruise will see you visit the Lacepede Islands, a series of low islands identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area as it supports up to 18,000 breeding pairs of brown boobies and roseate terns, which is possibly the largest such population in the world. This is also a fantastic location to spot green turtles, as the islands are its most important breeding grounds in Western Australia. Tonight enjoy the captain's farewell drinks before your last night onboard.

Awake this morning sailing into the cosmopolitan town of Broome. Then, be transferred to your beachfront hotel for a day of relaxation on Cable Beach.

Today you'll enjoy a full day excursion taking in the highlights of the untouched Dampier Peninsula. As you journey into indigenous Bardi country you’ll learn about the important role this area played in Australia’s pearling heritage and the significance it still holds for the region’s indigenous population. Swim in the sparkling water at Jologo Beach, visit Beagle Church and spend time at One Arm Point Aboriginal Community before heading back to your accommodation in the early evening.

A final day at leisure today to enjoy the sites and sounds of Broome, the legendary Cable Beach, the local breweries or simply laze by the pool of your resort.
