Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Danum Valley, Borneo

Set amidst some beautiful scenery, Borneo Rainforest Lodge has a charmingly rustic feel about it, with a proud focus on sustainability. The property consists of wooden chalets surrounding the main lodge and the small set up means that comfort, community and attentive service are all part of the experience. All of the chalets are en suite and the Deluxe Chalets have a private balcony, complete with oversized tub overlooking the trees beyond.

After a hard day of exploring, you can relax in the open-plan restaurant and bar, take in the views and enjoy a sundowner whilst listening to the sounds of the forest.

Rooms

The lodge has two main room types; Standard and Deluxe Chalets. Both are similar in terms of the layout, offering large, comfortable rooms with an en suite bathroom and their own sustainable (but very effective) fan cooling system. As an extra, the Deluxe Chalets offer a view over the rainforest, along with a private balcony and oversized tub. Both room types have a small fridge, with complimentary soft drinks which are replenished daily.

There are also two Pool Villas available, complete with a private plunge pool and your own personal butler. These are in high demand, and offer an extra level of service to your already exceptional experience.

Location

Set in the middle of the rainforest, the lodge is around a two to three hour drive from the small town of Lahad Datu. As a result of its remote location, everything you need is in the lodge itself; all food will be provided and there is a small shop for gifts and snacks. The scenery around the lodge is absolutely beautiful and the rainforest is teeming with wildlife, ready for you to explore.

Food and drink

All meals will be provided for you while you are staying at the lodge and will be served in the large, open-plan dining room. Although it is buffet-style, all the food is delicious and freshly cooked, with lots of choice available (including vegetarian options). The food is mainly Malay-style dishes with rice and noodles along with a large selection of fresh fruit and salad, and plenty of dessert options. There is also a large selection of drinks — both soft and alcoholic — available at the bar, which is open all day. The restaurant and bar area is a beautiful place to unwind at all times of day to take in the views.

Families

The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a fantastic place for families and there are plenty of activities to occupy children and teenagers. Whether it’s a short walk around one of the many nature trails in the area (don’t forget your binoculars!), tubing down the river or a night safari in one of the lodge’s 4x4s, there won’t be a dull moment and it will provide children with an experience they’ll never forget.

Please be aware that the lodge may not be suitable for very young children due to its remote location and the slightly difficult nature of some of the activities. Our specialists will be able to give you more information if you are planning on travelling with younger children.

Facilities and activities

Borneo Rainforest Lodge has some of the best guiding available in the country, and there is plenty to do to make the most of it. You’ll spend time wildlife spotting on one of the many trails around the lodge, trekking through the primary rainforest. Keep an eye out for macaques, gibbons, red leaf monkeys, hornbills and even orangutan. Weather-permitting, you can spend time tubing down the Danum River or climbing through the treetops on the amazing canopy walkway. At night, your guide will take you both by foot and by vehicle into the area around the lodge, using their keen wildlife spotting skills to find the elusive nocturnal creatures that roam after dark.

The lodge offers a laundry service and has Wi-Fi available in the restaurant and bar. It also has a small shop where you can purchase souvenirs, snacks and leech socks. Credit cards are accepted here.

Accessibility

Due to its remote nature, Borneo Rainforest Lodge is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

Environmental and social responsibility

Borneo Rainforest Lodge prides itself on its sustainability, and rightly so. Based in the middle of a conservation area, it uses green products as much as possible, including zero chemical detergents and solar energy. It has a waste management system, including reusable water bottles, and recycles waste water wherever it safely can. It also uses local products to reduce its carbon footprint.
