Tandayapa Bird Lodge
Tandayapa Bird Lodge, Cloudforest, Ecuador
Tandayapa is a small birding lodge set on the western slope of the Ecuadorian Andes in the Mindo cloudforest region, and started life as a reforestation project in 1999. Its location in the Tandayapa Valley makes it a perfect base for exploring the Choco bio region, a narrow zone of wet forest squeezed between the Andes and Pacific coast, home to an incredible diversity of flora, fauna and avifauna.
Around 160 individual species of bird have been recorded in the local area, including the Scaled Antpitta and Plate Billed Mountain Toucan, plus a variety of trogons and warblers amongst many others. Nine simple en-suite rooms are located in the main house - whilst not particularly characterful, these are by far the most convenient for the lodge facilities. The three rooms in the separate house enjoy more of a vista onto the forest but feel a somewhat darker and damper, and are not suitable for the less mobile.
Around the lodge guests can enjoy observing the hummingbird feeders on the lower platform of the main house, exploring the forest trails with a specialist guide and maybe paying a visit to the forest-level feeding hide, its black light attracting a variety of unusual nocturnal species. All meals are served in the dining area of the main house which also has a lounge with plenty of books, ideal for your leisure time between excursions.
