A converted country mansion, Hotel Casa Palmela enjoys a superb position in the heart of the Arrábida Natural Park, just 30 minutes’ drive from Lisbon. Set back from the road, the property is surrounded by extensive vineyards, backed by forested hillsides.
The main house was once the grand residence of a local family and boasts 400-year-old flagstone floors, original 17th-century tilework and elegant vaulted ceilings. Sweeping stone staircases lead to the upper levels and guest rooms, decorated with bright-white walls and floral accents. Outside, a large patio area extends out from the main restaurant, bordered by a manicured lawn. On the level below, there’s an inviting pool terrace that offers views over the vineyards as well as a hidden spa area. A converted annex next to the main building known as the Garden House offers a selection of two- and four-bedroom apartments as well as a separate pool area — excellent for families.
You can enjoy self-guided walks or bike rides around the property’s sprawling farmland and forest or follow the trail to the beach, a walk of around 40 minutes. Day trips to visit the beaches of Comporta or the historic city of Évora can also be arranged.

Rooms
Rooms at the Hotel Casa Palmela are dived between the original main house building and the Garden House annex. Each of the rooms in the main house is decorated in a classic style with whitewashed walls and elegant floral furnishings. Many of the rooms also contain antiques or novelties from the building’s past. The modern Garden House extension offers a number of two- and four-person apartments, complete with their own kitchens to allow for longer, more independent stays.
Location
Located in the heart of the Arrábida Natural Park, just outside of Setubal, Hotel Casa Palmela is surrounded by vineyards and forested hillsides. Lisbon can be reached in just 30 minutes by car or if you want to keep things more low key, a walk along the property’s countryside trails will get you to the beach in around 40 minutes. The pretty town of Azeitão is just 15 minutes away while the beaches of Comporta and the historic city of Évora can each be reached in just over an hour by car.
Food and drink
The hotel offers a full breakfast each morning in the main restaurant with tables extending outside to the terrace for those wishing to soak up the vineyard views. During the winter, lunch is also available on request and an à la carte menu is served each evening. In the summer months, the hotel’s summer café, The Spot, is open in the vegetable garden at the back of the hotel.
Facilities and activities
On the hotel’s vast estate, you’ll find a wide variety of flora and fauna. The hotel will be happy to provide you with a map to explore the estate on foot, as well as bicycles if you’d prefer. You can also enjoy a day of horse riding around Arrábida Natural Park. If you’d prefer to relax, you can indulge in a spa treatment or enjoy a wine-and-cheese tasting.
