Handlery Union Square Hotel

Handlery Union Square Hotel

San Francisco, The US

This centrally-located and family-owned hotel is a comfortable and friendly option with an excellent location on Union Square in the heart of San Francisco. Close to the city's finest shops and attractions, it offers a convenient base for exploring. Service is highly professional and personal, with staff going out of their way to attend to guests' needs and offer advice on where to go and what to do while here.

Decor is in a modern international style, classically elegant but lacking any local sense of character. There are 377 rooms spread across the original hotel building and a newer block which wraps around an outdoor heated pool, a rarity in the city. The rooms are bright and comfortable and offer air conditioning, cable television, fridge, Wi-Fi access and an in-room safe.

The hotel also has a sauna, gym, and an impressive restaurant, the Daily Grill, which is highly regarded by locals and decked out in the style of a 1930s grill. The menu features classic American comfort food and a wide range of wines, spirits and cocktails.

OUR OPINION:

Rooms at the Handlery can be on the small side in comparison to newer hotels but the location cannot be beaten. We particularly liked the personal service and breakfast is included each day for up to two people per room.

Rooms

Decor is contemporary but in classic international style in the hotel's 377 guest rooms. Dark wood furniture combines with earthy tones in the soft furnishings to give a comfortable, if unremarkable, impression. The Historic Section rooms in the hotel's original building offer Victorian detailing as well as all modern amenities, while the Premier Section rooms are newer and some have a private balcony. Views are of the courtyard pool or city. All rooms have pillow-top beds, cable television, complimentary Wi-Fi, mini refrigerator, coffee maker, air conditioning and an in-room safe.

Location

Set in the heart of Union Square, one of San Francisco’s most vibrant areas, the Handlery Union Square Hotel offers easy access to the best Bay Area attractions. The city's finest shops are on the doorstep and Bloomingdale's, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Contemporary Jewish Museum are all within a 10-minute walk, while the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and Haight Street are a 10- to 15-minute taxi ride away.

Food and drink

The Daily Grill is open all day and echoes the decor of San Francisco grills in the 1930s with dark woods, exposed brick walls, subtle lighting and an intimate but lively air. The menu features classic American comfort food with burgers, meatloaf, chophouse steaks, seafood and pasta served at lunch and dinner, while breakfast features hearty fare such as French toast, blueberry pancakes, eggs Benedict and omelets.

Facilities and activities

The hotel is one of the few central accommodation options to offer its own outdoor heated swimming pool. Guests can also make use of the gym and sauna and parking is available for an additional fee.
