Rail journey on The Ocean
A rail journey on The Ocean between Montréal and Halifax provides a wonderful glimpse of Canada’s past.
Step back in time, boarding a historic sailing ship to see Halifax’s waterfront from a different perspective.
Situated on the water and with a rich maritime history, we think Halifax is best seen from the water. This tour aboard the city’s signature sailing ship, a three-masted schooner, allows you to step back in time and experience the city from a different perspective.
In the late afternoon, take to the waters on this historic ship, the Silva, to take in the sights of Halifax’s waterfront with miles of shoreline guarded by Georges Island and its graceful lighthouse as the sun goes down. There’s no guided commentary on this 90-minute tour, with the crew allowing you to enjoy the scenery over a drink and snack, but they are on hand to answer any questions you might have.
You’ll also be able to participate in the sailing of the ship if you choose, hoisting the sails or winching the sheets. You can keep a lookout for whales, harbour seals and seabirds on the journey too. The bar, located on the lower deck, is open throughout the sailing to purchase additional drinks.
These activities are designed to give you the most authentic experiences around where you're staying. We work with local guides, who use their knowledge and often a resident's eye to show you the main sights and more out-of-the-way attractions. Our specialists can suggest tours and activities that will introduce you to the local ways of life.
