Formerly used to ferry teak between Vientiane and the south of Laos, the Vat Phou was converted into a floating hotel in 1993, but retains its unique oriental character. Accommodating up to 24 people, this spacious vessel never feels crowded and offers plenty of areas in which to relax in peace as you take in the idyllic scenery.

Southern Laos is often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours, but this serene and scenic area is well worth the journey to get there. A cruise on Vat Phou enables you to travel in true authentic style, and what the vessel lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in character.

During the three day journey on the barge you’ll see Khong and Khone Islands, and possibly spot some Irrawaddy dolphins. There are many stops en route to explore the region and the pre-Angkorian temples of Wat Phou and Oum Moung, after which you can relax on the upper deck with a refreshing drink.

Cabins

The 12 cabins have en suite bathrooms with hot showers, as well as air conditioning and twin beds, with two located on the upper deck and the rest on the lower deck. All have windows looking out over the southern Mekong River.

Dining

  • Restaurant serving a mixture of local Lao, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine
  • Bar on deck serving a variety of beverages
  • Complimentary tea, coffee and water

Routes

  • Mekong River - 2 nights between Pakse and 4, 000 Islands and vice versa.

This converted barge is full of character and is the only larger vessel that can operate on this stretch of the Mekong. It serves as an excellent floating base to explore the highlights of southern Laos and the 4,000 islands.
