Honeymoon ideas

Provided a trip is planned carefully, Madagascar is a wonderful place in which to travel. Our specialists regularly visit the country and have carefully picked the places, accommodation, excursions and guides which we feel will fulfil the expectations of couples who want something just that bit different from their honeymoon.

In Madagascar you can revel in the colour and vibrancy of the villages and towns, wonder at the beauty of the rainforests, and laze on some of the pristine beaches.

The country doesn't perhaps have the sleek approach to tourism more established countries on the African continent have, but if you have a relaxed travelling attitude, it is hard not to fall in love with this beautiful island.

Start planning your Madagascar honeymoon

Start thinking about your experience. These itineraries are simply suggestions for how you could enjoy some of the same experiences as our specialists. They’re just for inspiration, because your trip will be created around your particular tastes.

A variety of places to stay

The accommodation in Madagascar is of a lower standard than on mainland Africa. There are no luxurious lodges, large operators or hotel chains. We love this, as it means that there is a wonderful array of places to stay, each different from the next. In the rainforest there are small camps where chickens cluck around the garden and their eggs are collected for breakfast.

In villages and towns you can stay in old colonial homesteads, and on the coast you can choose from tiny guesthouses or boutique hotels. While the standards of comfort may vary, food is generally good.

Madagascar has a high standard of cuisine that blends Malagasy, French and Asian influences. Zebu steaks are a speciality, as are prawns, crab and fresh fish.

Unique wildlife

One of the highlights of your honeymoon will be seeing the wildlife of Madagascar, much of which is unique due to the fact it has evolved on this island over millions of years. And, an important benefit to bear in mind is that none of it is dangerous to humans, so you can even explore the parks on foot.

Its lemurs, of which there are currently 53 known varieties that are endemic to Madagascar, are a must see, while other attractions include chameleons and frogs.

The birdlife is remarkable as well with chances of seeing over 100 endemic species. If your honeymoon visit falls between July to September, then whale watching off the east coast is something not to be missed.

Beaches

Finally, no Audley tailor-made honeymoon would be complete without us finding you that perfect beach. Not a problem.

Madagascar is fringed by stunning coastline and tiny islands. The beaches are beautiful, untouched and undeveloped. Here turquoise waters meet white sandy shores and they are the perfect place to relax after an adventurous time exploring the mainland and its magnificent wildlife.
