Visit the Caprivi Strip, Namibia
In northern Namibia the Caprivi Strip stretches east along the top of Botswana and is quite unlike the rest of the country.
It receives high rainfall, has lush vegetation and rich and diverse wildlife. The Okavango and Kwando Rivers snake across the Strip giving rise to waterfalls, rapids and swamps. Fertile soils support many small villages with children herding goats and cows, often all over the road.
Mahangu National Park
There are a number of national parks in the Caprivi. Mahangu is characterised by riverine forests, flood plains and magnificent baobabs. The park is rich in game with many antelope species, elephant, buffalo and lion. The picnic spot in the park overlooks a wonderful hippo pool. Neighbouring Bwabwata has extensive savannah, ancient Kalahari woodland, lily studded wetlands and abundant game.
Mdumu National Park
Further east, Mdumu is notable for its large herds of buffalo whilst neighbouring Mamili is the largest wetland area in Namibia. The intricate network of channels, reed beds and ox-bow lagoons are a haven for sitatunga, red lechwe and a myriad of birds from greater swamp warblers to lesser jacanas.
Finally, in eastern Caprivi there are beautiful wilderness areas beside the Chobe River. Lodges here provide ideal bases for Chobe River trips or visits into Botswana.

A relaxing, alternative way to see the wildlife and birds of the Chobe River from the water, the Chobe Princess Safariboat is a simple, no-frills experience and a lovely quiet way to enjoy water-based activities.
Small, intimate and very comfortable, the Ichingo River Lodge is tucked into the riverine forest and thus peaceful and secluded.
This is not a luxury lodge and the accommodation is fairly simple. However it is fine for a one or two night stop en route.
The comfortable thatched Mahangu Safari Lodge is situated in riverine woodland next to the Mahangu Game Park. Activities from the lodge include game drives, excursions upriver to the Popa Falls and angling for tiger fish and bream.
The lodge consists of ten luxury tents elevated on stilts. One of the lodge's main draws is the large population of the park's wildlife which roams freely around the unfenced lodge surroundings, through the floodplain, savannah and woodland habitat.
Camp Kwando is situated on the banks of the Kwando River surrounded by riverine forest and open woodland. The camp has three tree-houses and ten thatched chalets.
