Stafford Bungalow

Stafford Bungalow

Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

Nestled among tea plantations, the Stafford Bungalow is a renovated colonial bungalow surrounded by a working tea estate of the same name. Built in 1884, it was once a family home for Scottish planters in the area and today retains the same intimate atmosphere. Its location, just 40 minutes from Nuwara Eliya, makes it convenient for trips to the town, nearby tea factories and the Hakgala Botanical Garden.

The four spacious bedrooms are all well-appointed and sleep up to ten people. Like the private rooms, the public spaces feature a clean, classic design, with cool white walls that allow the dark antique furniture to shine. The elegant library has a large selection of books and DVDs on hand, and is decorated with local artworks. An in-house chef prepares all meals, including traditional high tea, all of which you can enjoy in the dining pavilion. There is also a tennis court on site.

OUR OPINION:

We think this is a lovely place to relax for a couple of days, thanks to its intimate and serene feel, welcoming staff and convenient location.

Location

Set on a working tea plantation, Stafford Bungalow is just a 40-minute drive from the hill town of Nuwara Eliya. The Hakgala Botanical Garden and various tea factories are also nearby.

Food and drink

The bungalow’s on-site chef, a position known as the appu during the colonial era, provides the guests with all meals. The Western-style breakfast is followed by an optional lunch of local curries. Dinner is a sumptuous, three-course meal that features fresh local ingredients, with spices and vegetables taken from the estate’s own gardens. You can also participate in a traditional English afternoon tea, with freshly baked scones.
