Arctic Bath

Swedish Lapland, Sweden

A luxe spa-hotel with rooms floating on the frozen Lule River, Arctic Bath offers a Scandinavian-style retreat inside the Arctic Circle. In the heart of Swedish Lapland, it combines an arresting design, indulgent spa treatments and an exceptional location that’s ideal for exploring the region and enjoying both the northern lights and the midnight sun.

The main lodge is a nest-like structure that wraps around a hole in the ice, where you can take Nordic cold baths in the frigid water. Inside the building, you’ll find multiple saunas and treatment rooms, as well as the lounge bar and restaurant. You can opt to stay in one of the floating cabins on the river or the larger stilted suites on land.

Throughout, you’ll find soothing Scandinavian minimalism in the form of light pine and clean, sparse lines, softened with thick wool blankets, creative lighting and underfloor heating. The highlight, though, is the sweeping view through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The gourmet restaurant offers breakfast and a five-course dinner every day, with a focus on Sámi dishes prepared using local ingredients. The hotel also offers activities that help you explore the region, from forest baths to moose safaris to nature photography workshops.

OUR OPINION:

We love the singular concept of Arctic Bath — an opulent spa that also offers a large selection of activities for immersing yourself in Lapland’s vast natural wilderness, summer or winter.

Rooms

With just 12 cabins, Arctic Bath offers an intimate stay in the Lapland wilderness. You can choose from six floating cabins or six larger cabins and suites on land. Inside all, you’ll find light pine walls, heated floors, snug blankets and private outdoor decks and large windows, to enjoy the views. The floating cabins have slanted glass windows, for effortlessly taking in the night sky, and the land cabins are stilted, to offer the best panoramas. Suites have spiral stairs to a loft and can sleep up to five.

Location

Just a short drive from the village of Harads, the hotel floats on the Lule River in a boreal pine forest. There’s very little light pollution, thanks to its remote location inside the Arctic Circle, giving you a prime position for enjoying the northern lights and the midnight sun.
