Amira at Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco

Amira, Egypt & Morocco Specialist

Amira was lucky enough to be exposed to many cultures at a young age, which influenced her love of travel today. With her mother being from Morocco she had the chance to live in Rabat for a few years and return to visit family many times where she could practice her Arabic and explore the country.

Her love of cultures and people led to her earning a degree in Sociology from Boston University where she also played field hockey. During this time her family moved to the Netherlands where she spent her summers exploring Holland and neighboring European countries. Her family travel also brought her to Egypt, Dubai and Jerusalem.

Before joining Audley, Amira worked as a tour consultant organizing student tours all over the world, but decided to hone in on two countries she truly loves, Morocco and Egypt. With Audley Amira has returned to both countries.

Errachidia Oasia, High Atlas Mountains

I recommend visiting - The Atlas Mountains

While growing up, my mother would always tell me about the snow covered mountains of Morocco. I couldn't really picture them, especially when she told me people even went skiing.  All my past experiences were in the warm areas of Morocco, until my trip with Audley, where I finally saw the High Atlas Mountains.

Traveling from the desert to the mountains was one of the most scenic drives of my life. Riding through the switchbacks I was surrounded by the towering red stone of the mountains, which were sprinkled with greenery. When I reached my final destination I saw the snow-capped peak of Toubkal and felt the chilled breeze coming off the mountains. It was an amazing place to hike along the paths, surrounded by bubbling creeks and boulders covered in lush green moss.

I couldn't believe the sharp contrast in landscape from the hot sands of the desert. I completed my time in the mountains with a local Berber family where I spent the day cooking tagine, making bread over a fire that I had helped build, and sipping Moroccan Mint tea.  The High Atlas Mountains offers the best of Morocco's nature along with the most authentic local interactions.

Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh, Hurghada

I recommend staying at - Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh

This luxurious hotel is located along the crystal blue waters of the Red Sea. An escape from the hustle and bustle of Egypt, Hurghada allows you to unwind and enjoy the beach. The property is spread out in bungalow-style, which allows for peace and privacy. The rooms are bright with sunlight and decorated in a modern style.

You can spend time at the pool over-looking the sea, or put on your snorkel and scuba gear and explore the brightly colored fish and sea turtles that surround the coral reef. Enjoy a Mediterranean lunch at the Pergula by the pool, and fine Indian cuisine of the Zafraan restaurant at night.

I left the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh completely relaxed and ready to enjoy the rest of my Egyptian adventure.

I'll never forget when…

My most memorable experience is seeing the ancient pyramids of Giza and Dashur. Growing up I was fascinated by ancient Egyptian history and it had always been a dream to see the pyramids. The size of each block of stone was overwhelming let alone the astounding height of the pyramids themselves.

At Dashur I was able to climb up the steps of the Red Pyramid to climb into the entrance that led me inside. It was like nothing like I had ever experienced before and I felt like I had stepped back in time.
