Egypt Specialist

During my time at university studying Arabic and Islamic studies, I completed a year abroad in Jordan. I spent my weekends in Lebanon, and decided once I had finished, to travel from Oman to Jordan via Dubai, and Saudi Arabia. This sparked a fascination for the region. Despite their differences, each country offered unparalleled hospitality, with the mint tea being hard to turn down.

It was my most recent trip to Egypt that led me to join Audley. After spending a month intensively learning the local dialect, I fell in love with the country and the dynamic energy of Cairo. Upon returning, I was able to experience everything the country has to offer, from the enduring statues in the Valley of the Kings to the pristine waters of the Red Sea — perfect for snorkelling.

I'm now able to share this passion and love of Egypt with those who wish to see all the wonders this country has to offer.

Q&A with Freya

Abu Simbel, Egypt

What’s your most vivid travel moment?

I didn’t expect much from Abu Simbel. Having seen the Pyramids, I thought, what could compete? I was wrong. Turning the corner, the sheer magnitude of the structure hit me — two immense temples carved into the rock. I could now understand why people speak in raptures about the temple. It remains on the banks of Lake Nasser, a testament of Ancient Egypt’s craftsmanship. I could hardly believe it was moved piece by piece in the ‘60s to save it from flooding, yet remains intact — a symbol of Ancient Egypt’s skill in engineering and architecture. It was certainly worth the adventure there, as Abu Simbel is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Egypt.

Jebel Akhdar

Where would you love to travel next?

Despite exploring Oman for a month, I never made it to Jebel Akhdar and have regretted that decision. With the name ‘Green Mountain’ it's not the lush landscape one might expect, but rather rocky and harsh with secret oasis’ hidden in its wadis and hikes that end with panoramic views. As an adventure lover I'm naturally drawn to explore this mountainous area that is unlike anywhere else in Oman.

Bread maker, Khan el-Khalili

Your best piece of travel advice?

When travelling anywhere I would suggest embracing the local culture. As a person who studied Arabic, my tip for Egypt and the Middle East in general, would be to embrace the culture and their hospitality. I suggest trying some of the local delicacies such as Hibiscus juice or the various types of coffee. A few phrases of Arabic, not as hard as it sounds, will also bring smile to the locals.
