JAG Boutique Hotel

JAG Boutique Hotel

St. John's, Canada

From the outside, JAG Boutique Hotel looks like any other hotel. But step inside and you’re met with sleek, modern interiors with a rock ‘n’ roll twist. The owner is a huge fan of music and has painstakingly collected original artwork, signatures and memorabilia related to bands and musicians such as the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Bob Marley. This is tastefully displayed on the walls of the restaurant, lobby, rooms and suites, as well as the corridors (where classic rock music is softly played in the background).

The 84 rooms have a fresh, contemporary style and cover several categories to suit a range of guests. While the property’s restaurant, Exile, serves some of the best food in St John’s, you’re also just a few minutes’ walk from the town’s many restaurants and bars should you wish to venture further afield.

OUR OPINION:

While unassuming from the outside, we love the modern interiors of this boutique hotel, including its collection of music-themed original artwork which gives the property personality. Staff are exceptionally friendly, and the restaurant is one of the best in town.

Rooms

The well-appointed guest rooms have a modern style with cream and gray tones. Artwork featuring famous musicians is hung on the walls, with some rooms focusing on a particular artist or band. Spread across five floors, they’re each equipped with air conditioning, a large cable TV, mini fridge, Keurig coffee machine and complimentary Wi-Fi, as well as en suite bathrooms with rainfall showers and floss dispensers. Their large windows look out over the city, harbor or shipping yard.

The Standard rooms come with two queen beds, one queen bed or a king bed, with the latter also offering a sofa bed for additional guests. Larger Superior King rooms offer a second TV and an extra window in the sitting area. The One-Bed Suite has a separate living/dining area with L-shaped sofa, as well as two bathrooms. There’s also a Two-Bedroom Executive Suite which has its own kitchen and two bathrooms.

Location

The hotel is conveniently located just off Water Street — St John’s main street, said to be the oldest street in North America. George Street is also just a few minutes’ walk away, known for its many pubs and bars. Next to the hotel is a shipping yard which some rooms overlook, though with soundproofed windows there should be minimal noise.

Food and drink

Exile Restaurant has a Rolling Stones theme and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dishes include locally sourced, seasonal salads, a variety of barbecued, braised or grilled meats and fresh seafood. The lunch menu offers sandwiches, burgers and paninis, as well as fusion dishes like moose masala and cod tacos. Drinks can be enjoyed in the Exile Lounge throughout the afternoon and evening.

Families

Adjoining rooms are available, and the Standard King rooms come with a double sofa bed. There’s also the Two-Bedroom Executive Suite for those wanting further space.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has a well-equipped fitness room. Valet parking and 24-hour room service is available, as well as a dry cleaning service and access to a printer. Each night a turn-down service is provided, with complimentary chocolates from the Newfoundland Chocolate Company left on your bed alongside an inspirational quote from a well-known song.

Accessibility

Accessible rooms are available on each floor, reached by elevator.
