Perched along the terraced hillside of Gordes with commanding views over the Lubéron, La Bastide de Gordes is a lovely 18th-century Provençal chateau boasting a prestigious 'Palace' distinction. The property occupies a large section of the village and its grounds are dotted with cypress and olive trees, as well as boasting an outdoor heated swimming pool.
Rooms are styled in keeping with the region, featuring wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta tiles or parquet flooring, and antique furniture. There are two restaurants, among them the Restaurant Peir which serves upscale Provençal cuisine and boasts two Michelin stars. The Sisley Spa is another highlight, with its own private pool.
As well as being a romantic escape, Bastide de Gordes is also a family-friendly destination with cooking classes and guided hikes on offer. It makes an excellent base for exploring Provence: from here, you can walk the charming cobbled streets of Gordes and explore its restaurants and shops, or head to Avignon, which is less than an hour’s drive away.

If Gordes is the jewel of Provence, then the Bastide de Gordes is its crowning glory. We think the swimming pool and terraced gardens are exquisite, and we like the classic style of the rooms. Service is also first rate, making this one of our top hotels in the region.

The lavender fields of Abbaye de Sénanque are also just at the bottom of the hill. From the hotel you can take a drive into Avignon, which has the nearest train station and is around an hour's drive away.

Among the dining options here, the Restaurant Peir is the most well-known, holding the distinction of two Michelin stars and serving gourmet Provençal dishes in an intimate eight-table dining room. The bistro-style L’Orangerie is a great option for lunch, boasting an outdoor terrace and tower with views out over the countryside. We also recommend enjoying an apéritif here for great views of the sunset.
