Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

  • Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Washington DC. Arrive in the nation's capital and head to your hotel.

  • Today you can explore the city in-depth. We recommend visiting the Smithsonian Institute — the museums here cover a multitude of subjects, from dinosaurs to space, and many offer free admission. A visit to the White House is a must. You could also visit the Capitol Building and the National Archives, where the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights are on display.

  • Continue your exploration of Washington today. You might like to visit some other landmarks, take a boat trip on the Potomac River, or enjoy one of the many art galleries and museums.

  • Collect your hire car and drive to the pretty town of Charlottesville. You may wish to stop en route at some of the many excellent wineries that dot the Virginia landscape.

  • Spend a day exploring the pretty university town of Charlottesville. There are plenty of sights to visit nearby, including three former presidential homes; James Monroe's Ash-Lawn Highlands, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and James Madison's Montpelier.

  • Today you can continue to explore the university city of Charlottesville or visit nearby Shenandoah National Park. The park has a large population of black bears and offers waterfalls, scenic walking trails and magnificent views.

  • Today your drive takes you along the Blue Ridge Parkway, following the trail of the Blue Ridge Mountains to Roanoke. There is time to explore small Virginian communities and admire the spectacular mountain scenery en route.

  • Drive from Roanoke to Boone in North Carolina, taking you through the magnificent scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

  • Continue your drive south along the edge of the Cherokee National Forest to the town of Asheville. En route you will pass Lake James and Pisgah National Forest. This afternoon you may wish to visit the Biltmore Estate, once reputedly America's largest private home.

  • Enjoy a full day to discover the magnificent scenery of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Here you will find beautiful tree-clad mountain slopes and a plethora of wildlife. There are also some superb walking trails for you to explore.

  • You journey along the last stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway today as you skirt the southern side of the Great Smoky Mountains, heading to Blue Ridge.

  • Enjoy a final day exploring walking trails and some of the magnificent views in the area. Alternatively just relax and enjoy some Georgia hospitality at your accommodation here.

  • Make your way to Atlanta Airport today and return your car before boarding your onward flight.

  • Arrive home today to complete your journey.
