Arriving by air, once over the Zambezi escarpment the pilot will begin to lower the plane and the great rift valley of the Lower Zambezi unfolds before you.

You will see curving oxbow lagoons and the sandy waters of the great Zambezi River. Black pods of hippo litter the water, clumped herds of buffalo can be seen on the floodplains, and elephant move, ears flapping and trunks up, through the trees and away from the sound of the plane. Stopping on the dusty runway you step out, the heat envelops you and you make your way to the waiting vehicle, ready to take you to camp.

Wildlife of Lower Zambezi National Park

With its floodplains, grasslands and tall forests the Lower Zambezi Valley supports fantastic game densities. Impala are everywhere and kudu, eland, waterbuck, zebra and wildebeest are common. Elephant are often seen swimming the Zambezi River to feed on the grassy islands where buffalo also graze. The sandy river banks are home to iridescent carmine bee-eater colonies while kingfishers and African skimmers flit above the waters. Predators include leopard, large prides of lion and packs of wild dog.

Canoeing in the Lower ZambeziThere are a good range of activities in the park from walking safaris to drives, boating and fishing, and we recommend a stay of at least three days to explore it fully.
