Pousada Piuval, Pantanal, Brazil
Piuval Lodge is located 110 km from Cuiabá and 10 km from the town of Poconé. It is part of a 7000 hectare cattle ranch in the heart of the Pantanal. The lodge has 22 simple guest rooms with air conditioning and ceiling fans, private bathrooms and screened-in windows providing fresh air. There is a terrace area outside the rooms with hammocks, chairs and tables, all overlooking the extensive savannah that surrounds the lodge. There is also a restaurant that serves typical Pantanal meals (which can feel a little repetitive), a large television with satellite, a swimming pool and playground equipment. Excursions to maximise wildlife viewing include walking, horseriding, boat trips, an observation tower and truck safaris (during the dry season, it may not be possible to travel by boat or to partake in fishing excursions).
There is a fixed timetable of excursions, with one operating in the morning, and one in the afternoon. These are included in the cost of your trip whilst additional excursions such as trips out at sunrise and sunset can be booked and paid for locally.
When not on an excursion, guests can relax in the pool or laze in a hammock looking out onto the savannah. It is common to see caiman and several bird species really close to the lodge, as well as monkeys in the trees just a short walk from the lodge. In the rainy season the savannah floods and the floodwater reaches the edge of the lodge complex.
