Markets, monks and masses of people: India contains enough life and energy to fill a suitcase full of memory cards — specialist Graham Hurst shows off a selection of his favorites.
I have now spent over a year traveling around India. Every time I go back I stay for longer, with the last trip being six months long. My first visit was in 2007 when I fell in love with the country, especially the food, vibrancy and the color which formed the basis of my photographic interests.
My later trips gave me an opportunity to get off the beaten track and visit the lesser known states such as Ladakh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. My last trip was a one month research trip with Audley, where I was fortunate enough to stay in and visit some of the magnificent palaces and forts that have been converted to hotels which offer a uniquely Indian experience.
Fishermen, Kerala
Every afternoon on beaches up and down Kerala local fishermen arrive back on shore and pull in the day's catch. The men pull in the nets and the women sit in groups preparing the fish for sale.
Sari sale in Madurai Temple
An auction starts for saris at the amazing Meenakshi temple in Madurai. This seller unfurls the saris in a wonderfully theatrical style. All proceeds from the auctions go to the temple.
Sweet shop in the Old City’s bazaar, Jaipur
In Jaipur one highlight is getting lost in the Old City bazaars. I took this photo of these friendly guys after buying some of their Ghevar, which is a Rajasthani sweet traditionally associated with the Teej Festival.
Orange Stall, Hyderabad
There is no shortage of fresh fruit in India and this orange stall in Hyderabad provided a great angle to catch the shopper and what looks like a sea of oranges.
Cricket on the beach in Goa
Cricket is a national obsession in India and you can never walk too far without seeing an impromptu game somewhere. This photo is one of my favorite cricket images as the sun is dipping quickly but there is still time for one more bowl.
Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
The Mehrangarh Fort looms over the city of Jodhpur. As well as being an interesting site to visit, it also affords beautiful views over the sea of blue houses for which Jodhpur is famous.
Banana stall, Ooty
This banana seller looks like he could be there for a while with so many to sell! This is a typical market scene in India and it's incredible to think this is a lifelong career for this gentleman.
