The Gran Hotel is one of Paraguay's most interesting, charming, and historic accommodation options. In the mid-19th century it was the country 'quinta' of Madame Lynch, the adventurous Irish lady who accompanied the Paraguayan dictator Francisco Solano López on his return from Europe to his death on March 1st 1870.
In 1873, Dr Andreuzzi came to Paraguay and acquired the property, turning it into a hotel which maintains the cultured touches brought by Madame Lynch: a summer theater, the country's first ballroom and the lovely garden patios.
It's a real pleasure to dine in Madame Lynch's ballroom, and watch the old-fashioned Asunceños at their occasional afternoon canasta and tea dances.
