Gorges Lodge

Gorges Lodge

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Gorges Lodge offers arguably the most spectacular views in the Victoria Falls area. Perched right on the edge of the Batoka Gorge, a full 202 m (662 ft) above the mighty Zambezi River, the lodge offers a unique Victoria Falls experience.

It's just 20 km (12 miles) away from the bustle of Victoria Falls town, still within striking distance of the activities offered there. As the lodge occupies such an elevated position, you also have the surreal experience of raptors soaring around you at eye level.

The lodge is small, with warm and welcoming staff. The style is authentic and unpretentious, with polished teak floors, wooden furniture and subtle shades. The focus here is on showcasing the views, rather than having the fanciest soaps!

Each of the ten stone and thatch chalets have breathtaking views from their private verandas. There are two honeymoon suites, four view chalets and four double story view chalets. Each room has a large bed, draped in mosquito netting, and a lounge area with minibar and overhead fan. The en suite bathrooms have both a bathtub and shower. Wi-Fi is offered in the main lodge area. The double story view chalets have a master bedroom upstairs, with a small seating area and large balconies; downstairs can accommodate a child's bed.

Adjacent to the main lodge is Little Gorges which has an additional five rooms, all of which are tented and have dramatic views down the Dibu Dibu Gorge. The tents are similarly furnished to the chalets but the bathrooms have just a shower. Little Gorges has its own dining and bar area which can be used for groups or families but guests staying in these rooms are invited to use the facilities throughout the whole lodge.

OUR OPINION:

The location of Gorges Lodge is the highlight, the views are incomparable to anywhere else in the region and the setting slightly away from the town means you are away from the constant overhead buzz of helicopters. We like the unique activities including the gorge walk, and highly recommend this for a short stay either before or after a safari.

Rooms

There are ten stone and thatched chalets at the main lodge and five tented rooms at the neighboring Little Gorges. Of the ten chalets, four are double story which are well suited to families, two honeymoon suites are set slightly separate and the remaining four are twin/double rooms spread along the gorge edge with well thought out gardens providing privacy and bursts of color.

All rooms have twin queen or king-sized beds draped in a mosquito net with an internal fan, well-stocked minibar, hair dryer and en suite bathroom. Little Gorges rooms have just a shower, the rooms at the main lodge also have a bath. Every room has a small veranda with comfortable seating to enjoy the views at both sunrise and sunset.

Location

Situated 20 km (12 miles) away from the main bustle of Victoria Falls town, Gorges Lodge has a unique setting right on the edge of the steep gorge walls looking down to the rapids of the Zambezi River below and Zambia opposite. The quiet location provides a peaceful base from which to explore the famous falls but also enjoy alternative excursions such as a hike down to the river — not for the faint-hearted — and black eagle viewing from the deck.

Due to the proximity of the rooms to the edge of the gorge we advise caution for those suffering vertigo or traveling with young children.

Food and drink

Gorges Lodge runs on a fully inclusive basis and meals are served in a variety of locations. Breakfast is continental with a cooked option on request, all served within the thatched, open-fronted dining room. If you are out and about for a full day you will be provided a picnic lunch.

Dinner is three hearty courses normally enjoyed at a communal table in the garden. Traditional fayre is often included, particularly on braai night when you can taste the local staples such as mealie (maize) meal and relish.

Families

Children of all ages are welcome at Gorges Lodge but we advise caution with young children to the steep cliffs of the gorge.
